Would you buy watches as heirlooms?

by Penny on January 5, 2009

Some time back I was just having a conversation with some friends about watches as one of them was interested in some Orient watches. We saw many ads in the newspapers lately and I must say that there’s been a change in how watches are being marketed lately. Watchmakers used to sell their timepieces as luxury goods and it was a symbol of status if you own an expensive watch the likes of a Rolex.

Now, the watchmakers are selling watches as an heirloom. Just look at the advertisement by Patek Philippe and you’ll know what I mean. Their tagline says something like you don’t own a Patek Philippe, instead you are just safe keeping it for your future generation. One other brand says that they’ve only been making watches for over 100 years, and they don’t know how long their watches last because obviously the watches outlive them. Pretty good ideas behind all these advertisements, don’t you think?

I don’t think I can bring myself to pay through my nose for a watch as a family heirloom or an investment. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it in years to come. What about you? Do you buy your watches just to tell the time, for the brand, or for your future generation?
