This is my personal opinion as to why Tesco is the better hypermarket to shop in amongst the many hypermarkets that we have in the country. You may beg to differ based on your own experiences shopping in other hypermarkets. And if you really do have something good to share about any of the other hypermarkets, do drop a comment to let us know something that we don’t know of.

Now on to why I like shopping at Tesco as compared to places like Giant and Carrefour. Firstly, I have to say that most of the products that are offered as well as the brands of products are rather similar in all hypermarkets. But I find that I am offered more varieties in Tesco. Every hypermarket offers its own house brand of products but I find that I trust the Tesco house brand products more than others. How about you? As to why that is so, I can’t explain it. Maybe it’s because when I was a student in the UK, I was used to buying the Tesco house brands as they were the obvious cheaper alternatives amongst the many other brands and these house brand products have proven to be quite good.

I guess one of the more important factors is also the prices of products at Tesco. I find them cheaper in many of the essential products that I shop for. I regularly buy Friskies cat food and amongst the many hypermarkets as well as supermarkets, Tesco sells them the cheapest at this point in time, for RM13+ a bag whilst other places are selling a bag for RM18+. That’s a whole lot cheaper in Tesco, don’t you think? Also, the Himalayan Hair Detangler & Conditioner costs me RM23+ elsewhere while Tesco sells it at RM20+. The most impressive of things that would always make me return to Tesco to shop is their Huggies diapers. For a bag of Huggies Dry Comfort, Tesco sells it at RM35+ whilst it costs a whole lot more (some RM10 more!) elsewhere.

I also find the crowd who shop at Tesco to be more agreeable with me. I somehow get really frustrated at other hypermarkets where the shoppers tend to hoard the shopping aisles with their shopping carts. They leave their carts in the middle of nowhere and make it impossible to pass through. I’m not sure if this has to do with the size of the shopping aisles or the layout of the place, or simply the mentality of the shoppers at these different hypermarkets.

Speed is another thing that is important to me. I get really irritated queueing for long at the cashier’s to check out. Some cashiers work really slowly or only limited counters are opened even during peak shopping hours which result in long queues. At Tesco, they are now doing something to help with cutting down queueing time. It’s their new Tesco Queue Buster where if you are queueing behind 2 shopping carts, they will open another cashier counter to serve the queues, until all available cashier counters except the Express Lanes are used up! Now that’s a great time saver and I appreciate the readiness to serve customers better and faster.

I also like the point collection system with the Tesco Club Card. I don’t shop that much at Tesco, but for whatever little points that I’ve swiped on the card, I’ve received many rebate vouchers from Tesco. Whilst they may not be very much savings (RM1 savings here and there), at least I get to see the “rewards” of my points collection pretty quickly.

So there you have it, my top 5 reasons why I prefer shopping at Tesco rather than at any other hypermarkets. What about you? Which is your preferred hypermarket and why is it compelling to you?
