Where to buy cheongsams for Chinese New Year

by Penny on January 16, 2009

In my whole life time, I’ve owned only 2 pairs of cheongsams. And these are my wedding cheongsams. So you can imagine that I can’t possibly wear them for more casual occassions like Chinese New Year. I’m not the biggest fan of cheongsams but I do like modern cheongsams which can be worn as a casual dress. But these are hard to find too.

Recently though, I’ve been seeing a lot of nice modern cheongsams that can be worn quite casually. Perhaps more people are on the look out for them and thus there’s been enough demand to bring about more supplies. If you are wondering where to buy cheongsams for Chinese New Year, you can visit a few of these places where I’ve spotted them. A note though, they are not necessarily cheap. But if you look hard and are in luck, you might just find some on sale. And I have seen some that are very reasonably priced during the recent sales.

From today, 16 January until 29 January, Isetan at KLCC is having a Qi Pau promotion. For the benefit of those who do not know, Qi Pau in Chinese means cheongsam.

Apart from Isetan at KLCC, I’ve also seen many small but nice boutiques in 1 Utama that sells very nice cheongsams. Walk along the corridors that connects the old and new wings of 1 Utama on the first floor, and you will see these shops. The selection of cheongsams aren’t very wide, but there are enough nice ones to drool over.

Other than cheongsams, there are also cheongsam inspired tops that are also suitable for the new year. These can also be worn again even after the new year as they are quite trendy and versatile, to be paired with a nice pair of slacks for a more formal look or a pair of jeans for a casual day out.

Have you bought yourself any new clothes for the new year? Make sure you buy them in nice, bright colours as these are favoured. You can read about the rationale behind wearing bright cheery colours for the new year on an article about customary do’s and don’ts for the new year.

We only have slightly over a week to Chinese New Year and I’ve not done much shopping at all! I better hurry along and get it all sorted by the end of this coming weekend. Happy weekend, shopping and spring cleaning, everyone!
