Some savings on contact lens

by Penny on August 1, 2008

I’ve been a loyal user of the Bausch & Lomb range of contact lens for the last 12 years. I wear monthly disposable lens and in the last 12 years I’ve never used any other brand of contact lens. Within the Bausch & Lomb brand itself, there are several ranges of monthly disposable contact lens and I’ve tried a few of them. My favourite is still the SofLens 38 range.

A box of Bausch & Lomb SofLens 38 contains 6 pieces of lens

I find that it stays on better without causing dryness even with over-wearing. One of the other reasons why I like this range is because of the packaging. Each lens comes packed individually in a casing and it is with ease that I tear it open. I’ve tried other range of Bausch & Lomb lens where the lens come in a joint strip and I found those very hard to tear open. I often hurt my nails and finger when trying to peel those plastic open.

I buy the lens by boxes. Each box contains 6 lens which means 3 months worth of usage. Each box costs RM60. If you buy them pair by pair, you will normally be charged around RM30 per pair. So it is cheaper to just buy them by the box since this is a long term consumption.

I’ve been looking for this particular range of lens for a few weeks and many of the optical shops that I visited told me that they now need to place orders for this range and I would have to return to collect the lens once the stock came in. I was surprised as this used to be a popular range and was easily found in most optical shops. I finally found a shop near Atria Damansara Jaya that held stock of these lens. I was informed that the new stock of the lens was selling at RM73. She still carried old stock so she sold them to me at RM60 and I decided to buy more to save on future higher prices!

Since I’m on the topic of contact lens, I would also like to share my thoughts on the use of contact lens solution. There are a few brands of these multipurpose solution in the market and the price varies with each brand. I believe Bausch & Lomb is the most expensive followed by Complete. I’ve used both and I’ve also tried other brands such as SensiPlus and Solo Care Aqua. The latter two brands cost substantially less than the former two and I find that they work just as well. I honestly do not feel or see the difference between each brand, so I decided to stop using the more expensive brands.

A 330ml bottle of Solo Care Aqua solution costs around RM14 if I remember correctly

Usually, each bottle of this solution comes with a free contact lens casing. We may not realise it but these casings actually play an important role in how much solution you actually use when soaking and storing your lens in them. I’ve always liked the Bausch & Lomb cases. When I switched to using the Solo Care Aqua solution, I switched the casing to the one provided by Solo Care too. That’s when I realised that the Solo Care solution doesn’t last me as long as the Bausch & Lomb solution, not because it comes in less quantity, but because the casing is much bigger than the Bausch & Lomb ones. This will result in you naturally pouring our more solution to soak and store your lenses.

Can you see the difference in size?

As a result, you end up running to the store to buy solution more frequently and at the end of the day, you could be spending more than if you were using a smaller contact lens casing. This is quite a smart marketing strategy to make you buy more solution, don’t you think?
