Review of The Big Bad Wolf Books warehouse sale

big bad wolf books warehouse sale

It is the sale I’ve been waiting for since I last went in May and grabbed tonnes of books. Finally it came. The Big Bad Wolf Books warehouse sale starts today and ends on 2 December 2009. Without missing a beat, I went for the sales today. Here’s how I find the sale this time around.

This round of warehouse sales promised more books which I have to agree is true. However, the sale is held at Amcorp Mall where it is a lot smaller than the previous place in Petaling Jaya’s Section 13 where all the warehouse sales are normally held.

Coupled with a lot more interested shoppers this time around, it was actually quite impossible to shop. The place was simply too small to accommodate books and people all together!

There wasn’t enough space for people to queue up paying at the cashiers, so it resulted in a long snake of a queue, going around the ENTIRE place! No kidding! The queues were going on in between aisles where people are also browsing for books. It was really difficult getting from one place to another. Coupled with the fact that lots of people were lugging around big boxes and bags to hold their books, you can imagine what a nightmare it really was.

But the good thing this time around is that children’s books are placed in a different section residing in a small room beside the big hall. It is a lot easier to shop for children’s stuff now. However, I find that the previous round’s selection for kids’ books were better.

Books and prices wise, it’s definitely awesome. Great titles at great prices as promised, no doubt about that. In addition to the low prices, there’s also an extra 10% discount if you use an OCBC credit card to pay for your purchases. But the pain to wait in the long queue was very real as people had to queue for about an hour before they got to their turn!

We were lucky that in the midst of queueing, the call for cash payment opened up and it was a lot faster to just head over to the cash cashiers. There are no additional discounts if you pay by cash. Never mind the discount, at least I didn’t waste an hour to wait my turn.

So did I buy lots from this trip? Not that many compared to my last trip in May. I bought 8 activity books for Ryan and 13 business and self-help titles for myself. I paid RM175 for a total of 21 books. Great deal indeed.

In the previous sale, I went everyday for the warehouse sale and each time I went, I picked up more and more stuff. This time around, I’m really done going this once. I don’t want to go back there and wrestle my way through the crowds and to wait in line to pay up.

If you are going, happy shopping and bargain hunting. Just be patient, wear something cool and light, bring some of your reusable shopping bags to lug books around or just ask for empty boxes at the counter (they provide you with them for free). But I think if you have a small market trolley, those would do very nicely to save you from carrying.

Enjoy the sale!

Here’s my own review of the sale: http://imaginarylands.wordpress.com/2009/11/26/big-bad-wolf-sale-a-joy-and-an-utter-nightmare/

I’m like you – I’m the sort to make return trips to book warehouse sales, but after struggling, jostling and getting my personal space invaded left-right centre, and not to mention q-ing half an hour to get into the place and q-ing over a bloody hour to pay for my books, I’m DONE.

Very badly organised, if you tell me. They could’ve sold more books if it was at a bigger place and better organised.

Wow, I never that cinema was SO tiny to start with, so I agree with you on the location.

I have a policy never to go back to book sales more than once – but I agree, this weekend: no going to Amcorp Mall….

It’s true that the venue is tiny, but I actually am glad that it’s in such an accessible place. All the previous warehouse sales I’ve been to, were nightmares as far as public transport goes.

Any Linda Howard’s fans? I have 2 books of hers for RM8 each.
1-Drop Dead Gorgeous
2-Up Close & Dangerous

I accidentally bought the same book from Big Bad Wolf Sales today. If interested, please email me at mamamia007@hotmail.co.uk

thanks for your review! and i agree.. tiny, tiny venue and very narrow ‘aisles’ = not a comfortable shopping experience.
but if anyone’s still planning to go, i suggest a weekday or later in the evening. i went today (sunday) at 6pm and was out of there in an hour with a box full of great buys. queuing took less than 5 mins.
don’t bring kids or a shopping trolley. there’s no room to maneuver the trolley and small kids WILL get knocked over by eager shoppers carrying heavy boxes.

Hi ladies, agree with your points. Haha, looks like we aren’t very happy with the venue. Let’s hope they realise how badly managed it was and next time will be a better shopping experience for us all :) Thanks for sharing your reviews here too.

Hi Penny! A great review on the book sale. I agree with the majority, i.e. the venue is small and the aisles are ultra-narrow! But I made things tougher by lugging my 1 1/2 year old son for the trip, which I shouldn’t have as he was cranky due to the 100s of people there. A lot of good books and would have left with a lot more had it no been for my son putting up a show. Thank God for McDonald’s which is just opposite of the venue!

But the best part was looking up for my wife and son when I was at the cashier….I realised that I’m picking up the tab!! And I only had 3 books for myself compared to a boxful for my wife and son…sigh….
