Do you have a preferred moon cake brand to recommend?

It’s almost time of the year when the Chinese start to shop for moon cakes to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. We are definitely spoilt for choices when it comes to the flavours of moon cakes available, not to mention the many brands in the market too.

From the lesser known brands that cost about RM5 to RM7 each, to the medium priced ones  for about RM10 to RM14 each at prominent Chinese restaurants, to the hotel brands that cost RM17 to over RM20 per piece of moon cake, we are never short of selections for moon cakes and at different affordability levels too.

We are not the type who are fancy or go for the more contemporary flavoured moon cakes like durian and chocolate. Rather, we prefer the original moon cake flavour with single or double egg yolk. What about you, do you go for the more exotic and localised flavours?

Also, where do you buy your moon cakes from? Any recommendations for good and delicious moon cakes? We always buy the ones from the Tai Thong group of restaurants. I suppose it’s because we’ve been ingrained with the notion that they make more authentic moon cakes.

I can’t really vouch for that since I’m not a big time moon cake eater. It’s just as well that I’m not, otherwise I might indulge in them so much that I’d need to get on an elliptical trainer!

Do you also get tempted to buy moon cakes from brands that offer beautiful packaging? I think the packaging is important and helps the brand win customers. Before, the boxes that moon cakes come in look rather boring and traditional. But nowadays if you just look around, they are really pretty and creative. Sometimes, even I was tempted to go for some of them just because I wanted that pretty box! Are you like that too?

So has anyone any great recommendations on where to buy what you consider to be the best moon cake in the market?

I usually only buy mooncakes as a gift (I am also not really a big mooncake eater). Most of the time I would go for those brands with beautiful packaging.

This year’s Chinese New Year I found a brand which offer beautiful packaging gift set and I got them for friends and family. Makes my job so much easier.

Yes me too, I buy the moon cakes to give away, not so much for home consumption. So pretty boxes work well but I am also concerned whether the recipients will like the taste…so gotta try to balance out a bit on the presentation and taste!
