The usual plants for Chinese New Year would be pussy willows, cherry blossoms, lime plants, bamboo shoots and money trees. But it looks like the poinsettia plants are now an addition to the collection. Apparently the redness of the flower is what the Chinese like about the plant, and think it suitable for the Chinese New Year.
