We’ve recently just discovered a new eatery called Otak-Otak Place. So far, I’ve seen 2 outlets, one in 1 Utama and the other located in the new Giant Hypermarket at Kota Damansara. We’ve tried the one at 1 Utama and I am actually quited fascinated with the place. Not so much because of the food, but because of the concept of the restaurant. Otak-Otak Place is all about rekindling your childhood passion. You will notice a lot of little novelty ideas that tend to remind you of your childhood days. Lots of pictures of these to follow suit in this post.
About the food, well I have to say that it isn’t that great, it’s alright and rather reasonably priced. You will find a variety of local dishes offered on its menu besides its specialty of otak-otak from Muar. Here are some that we’ve tried. Like I said, they aren’t the most fantastic there is, but neither are they a turn off. So overall, I would say the food is so-so. Pricing wise, I can’t recall them all but I think they range from RM8.90 a dish to RM12.90, from what we ordered. The otak-otak dishes range from RM3.00 to RM9.90, depending on the types of otak-otak.
Below are some of the food we tried:

Nasi beriani served in a claypot with dahl curry on the side

Mee rebus, also served in a claypot to preserve heat

Nasi lemak served interestingly in a 2-tier stainless steel tiffin carrier!

Mee bandung Muar served in a claypot

Roti jala served with chicken curry on the side

Steamed fish otak-otak

Steamed otak-otak with eggs

Cucur otak-otak

The otak-otak fillings in the cucur otak-otak
As for drinks, we were quite thrilled that they were served in some long forgotten way…

How often are you served Coke in a classic Coca-Cola glass bottle?

Teh tarik served with a slice of cream cracker, just like old times
Some of the things that caught my eye while dining at Otak-Otak Place are these:

It’s been a while since I’ve seen these tidbits I had as a kid in the market!

A pack of laminated Happy Family cards is put on each table. My little boy loved the cards!

The wall is casually drawn with a hopscotch game

The menu resembles a school’s exercise book!

Even the back of the menu is just like the exercise books we had in school with Rukunegara and the times table!

The table mat shows a game of “guli” that we so loved as kids

Another version of the table mat – Boys will probably remember playing with their plastic soldiers as kids!
Would I go back to Otak-Otak Place for a meal? Well, probably. Since the food isn’t that bad and the service we got was pretty good, I don’t see why we won’t go back there for a meal or two. But it’s not my everyday kind of restaurant, that’s for sure. Maybe on days when I feel like rekindling the passion of my childhood…
Have you eaten at Otak-Otak Place? What do you think of it?

I love roti jala there! It was superb. Will definitely going back!
At least they have a satisfied and happy customer in you, Iris. Perhaps many more out there too!
I really had a bad experience in last week where i & my family stop in otak-otak place in 1-utama to eat. I had to ask few times for the staff to come over to help to clean up the table before ordering. Addition to that, the staff show his angry face to us and throw his serving dish in front of us. Is it the service they are offering to their customer? We are coming to this place to eat & not purposely to watch your angry staff to show off his anger in front of us.
