I think your friends are quite right to say that you can start with a 2nd hand body. However, do check the body properly and ensure that the shutter and sensors are working properly before purchasing it.

A good camera body is important but its the lenses which will be an investment later.

Anyway, just out of curiosity – between the D60 and D80, why not the D80?
