Nikon D60: Buy new or secondhand?

by Penny on October 28, 2008

Hi there! If you're new here, and enjoy what you're reading, you can subscribe to my feed. Thanks for visiting!

From deciding to venture into the wonderful world of DSLR cameras and deciding on the brand and model of an entry-level SLR, I’ve finally come to the stage where I’m asking myself whether I should go for a brand new camera or a secondhand one. The latter seems to be recommended by many and I’m comforted by the fact that people find this acceptable, which means that many secondhand cameras are of reasonable quality.

Some professional photographer friends have strongly suggested that I get a secondhand one, as they see a future upgrade to a higher-end model. But to me, that is their way of thinking because they’re pros in this field. I’m no professional photographer and I don’t think I’m headed in that direction, so whether I will keep upgrading the camera remains to be seen. If I get very hooked into photography after handling my first SLR, I might. Or, I could just be happy enough with my entry-level one. I really don’t know which direction I will go into.

So I’m still torn between getting a new one (assuming I will be happy with it for a long time with no upgrades), or a secondhand one. On the other hand, if a secondhand camera is in good condition, it could still last me for years even though I don’t upgrade. Any thoughts on this, anyone?

Hey there… I just dropped by this blog…

I think your friends are quite right to say that you can start with a 2nd hand body. However, do check the body properly and ensure that the shutter and sensors are working properly before purchasing it.

A good camera body is important but its the lenses which will be an investment later.

Anyway, just out of curiosity – between the D60 and D80, why not the D80?

I would say go for the second hand body if the price is worth it.

Have to look at the condition and the price of the 2nd hand. Otherwise just get a new one, they are very cheap these days.

Angie, I’ve got to learn how to test out the camera and all. Or better still, get my more expert friends to help coz I’m sure they know better how to determine the quality of a camera, huh? I find the D80 a bit too bulky for me. I’m still an amateur, not willing to lug around a big camera, haha!

Justin, I would think the price difference between new and used would be quite big. So it is quite tempting to have some savings there…

Neo, that’s what’s tempting me, that the prices of an entry level isn’t exactly killing. That’s why still don’t know if I should. Hard decision!
