Lock & Lock versus Tupperware

by Penny on June 2, 2009

Recently I’ve been sucked into the world of food container craze. I especially like small and cute ones which are not very practical at all. I mainly just look at those but buy the more practical and needed ones. I’m caught between 2 particular brands for food containers – Lock & Lock and Tupperware. Which is your preferred choice of the two established brands? Here are some of my personal comparison between Lock & Lock and Tupperware.

What I like about Tupperware

I like the fact that they are of lifetime guarantee. Although it only covers some aspects, it’s somehow quite effective in creating the perception that the quality of the food containers are good. It is also supposedly to be using safe plastics.

Tupperware products come in various shapes and sizes. Some of the products are quite innovative, like the one pictured below where you can extend and retract the container so that it offers various sizes of storage.

I like this GoFlex Tupperware series. Very innovative as well as bright and cheery.

Other than that, Tupperware also has a range of containers that are specifically meant for freezing food items. I find them very useful and effective when storing fresh vegetables. They actually can last longer as compared to keeping them in other containers or even wrapped up in papers or plastics.

What I don’t like about Tupperware

A lot of the designs of its containers are quite boring, and I believe they are legacy designs from years ago. They may have improved on the colours of the containers but the designs have pretty much remained the same.

I also find the covers of the containers to be a little hard to put on. Although this is the case to ensure tightness to avoid any spillage, I suppose it would help if Tupperware can improve on this aspect.

What I like about Lock & Lock

Lock & Lock containers are truly stackable! It’s design in such a way that it creates a proper inter-locking mechanism so that it’s not just simply putting one container on top of another when storing them in the refrigerator. They also come in various shapes and sizes for you to store all kinds of things from dried condiments to fresh vegetables to uncooked pastas.

Some Lock & Lock containers also come in bento formats where there are separators provided so that you can separate different dishes out without mixing them all in one big container. If you wish to have them all mixed up anyway, then all you need to do is to remove the separators.

What I don’t like about Lock & Lock

The covers need to be snapped together to close shut and it needs to be done for each side of the container. Although this will ensure it to be air tight and to avoid spillage, I do find this a chore to have to open up or snap shut the four sides. Maybe I’m just being lazy! :)

Which would you choose?

Price wise, both Tupperware and Lock & Lock containers are not cheap to come by. I believe Tupperware is a little more costly than Lock & Lock.

Given both these good brands of food containers, which would you choose? I personally prefer Lock & Lock. If Tupperware becomes more similar to Lock & Lock in terms of being more on the modern in their designs, I might just switch camp and choose them instead :)

i will go for tupperware. anything other than tupperware is tipuware. who cares about designs when you want them for proper and good storage. vege and fruits can keep for weeks with minimal spoilage. go for the one touch lock. opening and closing is a breeze and it is guaranteeeeed air tight. from the time of our grandmothers – they cant be wrong, can they!!!!

Haha, tipuware has become quite a popular term in comparing non-Tupperware brands of containers! :) True, Tupperware has always been a trusted brand since the longest time…

There is no question about it, nothing beats Tupperware for both quality and value. When you think about the cost of Tupperware, don’t forget that lifetime warranty on product defects that you mentioned. Further, if you lose your seal for your Lock & Lock, can you replace the seal, or do you have to buy a whole new container? With Tupperware, you contact a consultant (easy to find on-line) and purchase a replacement seal seperately.

Further, as “Die Hard Tupperware” mentioned, you can’t beat Tupperware for fruit and vegetable storage with the Fridgesmarts. There isn’t another product like it. Tupperware is always innovative and coming out with new products. You can see many of them copied on the market, like the microwave containers with the little pop-up on top when they cook – that is Crystalwave and Rock ‘n Serve, and it was around years before the copies came out.

Regarding the “legacy” styles, Tupperware tracks the current popularity…if a product isn’t popular enough right now, it goes back in the closet for another day. But here’s the deal, when one of these “legacy” products is not available, you can bet there TONS of requests for it. Happens all the time. Folks are bummed when they can’t get them! So Tupperware is on the right track there as well.

Regarding colors, if you follow Tupperware as I do and pay attention to the color scheme, you will notice that they always come out with the same colors that are currently popular at the department store. Often this occurs even a few months ahead, so it is apparent that Tupperware is one of the trailblazers for the colors we currently like in our kitchen and home.

If you like your containers to fit on top of each other and fit in the manner you mentioned, buy in sets, the containers always fit together well. Also, you can consider Modular Mates, which while the unbeatable product in your pantry, you can put cooled food into it in the fridge, and then you will have squares or rectangles or whatever you like that fit together.

Thank-you for opening this conversation. I hope you and others will benefit by this sharing. If anyone has any questions about sets that fit well together for food storage, or “what is a Fridgesmart?” (will save you bucko bucks on produce!), feel free to contact me via this or my site! – Ana the KitchenMama (find me on Twitter too!)

After spending a lot of money on Lock & Lock, I found you need to be careful when buying Lock & Lock. Lock & Lock is only good if it is made in Korea. I bought two storage sets at Walmart which are made in China, the inside surface of the container changes color (become “white” like when you burn the plastic) after half year. But other sets bought from costco are still good after 4 years usage.

Thanks for the warning Jane. Didn’t know of the difference in quality.
