I know John King has been around for quite a while now, but I only tried them just some 2 months back. I was told that the normal egg tarts and the durian tarts are hot items. So I tried them both. But I didn’t find them to be that exceptional. I’ve had better and those are the ones I bought from some small coffee shops and even some dim sum restaurants.
But then again there must be people who find the egg tarts to be good, otherwise John King outlets won’t be mushrooming around town. Furthermore, the prices of the egg tarts aren’t exactly cheap, but still it’s surviving and growing in franchise. They must be doing something right.
I personally enjoy some mini egg tarts that used to be available in PJ’s New Town or State. There’s a coffee shop in the corner where a man slowly bakes the tarts and the queue is usually quite long due to the tarts being freshly baked. The pastry is really soft and buttery, which I find a lot more yummy compared to John King’s.
However, the man no longer sells egg tarts in that coffee shop. Not sure if he’s moved or he decided to close the business. If it’s the latter, it’s really quite a waste. It’s so good that I can eat tart after tart! I ate a lot of them during my pregnancy and luckily I didn’t balloon up then, otherwise I would need the best weight loss supplement to help me get rid of those layers!
What are some of your favourite places when it comes to egg tarts? Many people recommend the shop in Jalan Pudu too. I’ve been there once but have forgotten how to go there now…what a pity

Definitely the egg tarts from Tong Kee Brothers. No other comes close.
