Hair rebonding with Shiseido products

by Penny on September 8, 2008

Read this post to find out how the hair rebonding process is done, the kind or products and chemicals used as well as some tips to care for rebonded hair.

The Process & Products Used

The rebonding process took me a whole 4 hours. Yes, I was dead bored because I didn’t expect it to take that long! I’ve had friends who said they did it in 2 hours and some took 3 hours max, including doing colour. My guess is that my hair is just too stubborn and didn’t relax as easily as others did.

The salon that I went to used a complete range of products from Shiseido. I’ve heard that it’s more lasting than Loreal. The process started with a gentle hairwash followed by conditioning of the hair.

Next, to straighten the waves, my hair was applied with Shiseido Crystallizing Straight H1 cream which is a smoothing and retexturizing cream. When my hair was thoroughly covered with it, a steamer was put over my head for a good half hour.

When that was done, the lady did the strand test on my hair to see if it has relaxed sufficiently. Well the first round didn’t quite do the job because she went on to apply some more chemical and set the timer to another 10 minutes.

After washing it off, came the hot, steaming hair straightener. This itself was a painfully long process because she patiently and slowly straightened the hair bit by bit. It looked as if she was only grabbing 20 strands of my hair at a time when I seem to have millions of them. Of course, I must have exagerated there…but that’s how long I’ve waited for my entire head of hair to finally get straightened out.

I was happily stretching my limbs when the nice lady kept her straightener away. Little did I know that I wasn’t nearly done! She now started applying the second type of the Crystallizing Straight H2 cream and set the timer to go off in 10 minutes. After that I had a thorough rinse-off and finally, my hair was blown dry.

Now I’m really done. She applied the finishing touches with Shiseido’s Crystallizing Aquafix. I was recommended 2 things – to use the shampoo-cum-hair mask and the Crystallizing Aquafix gel. A small bottle of the shampoo costs RM62 while the tub of gel costs RM40. Apparently if you use that shampoo/mask, you do not need to do hair treatment. And the gel is a hair moisturiser that also helps to maintain the hair ends.

Shiseido Crystallizing Aquafix – definitely recommended!

If you have hair as stubborn as mine, you will probably end up sitting for 4 hours getting your done rebonded. Can you take that? I’m not sure if I will go for it again!

The Result

Spending those hours at the salon did payoff big time somewhat because I do like the much softer and healthier looking hair after the rebonding. It makes me look a little neater than before with my thick and messy hair. Using the Shiseido Crystalliazing Aquafix has also made the hair manageable in terms of not having entangled hair. One of my displeasure from doing this rebonding is the chemical smell that is left on my hair for days! A quick check with several friends who have done rebonding confirmed that this is normally the case.

Tips on Caring for Rebonded Hair

Your professional hairdresser would tell you that once you have done rebonding, you are not to wash your hair for at least 3 days. During these 3 days, you should also not tie your hair or use a hairclip in any way. You need to leave it alone to settle. Whilst 3 days is the minimum period to not tie your hair, some hairdressers would recommend that you do not do so for 2 weeks after the rebonding.

In the first 3 days, whenever you take a shower, use a shower cap (remember, do not tie up your hair and push the locks into the shower cap!) to prevent your hair from getting wet. After the third day, when you gladly and gloriously wash your hair, avoid using any dandruff shampoos. It is recommended that one does not use dandruff shampoos on rebonded hair because this type of shampoo will cause hair to become dry. If you absolutely need to use a dandruff shampoo, try to alternate the use with a regular shampoo.

To maintain your beautifully rebonded hair, avoid curling up your hair too much. This will eventually cause it to return to its original state sooner than it’s supposed to last. If you take care of your rebonded hair, it can last you for more than a year.
