Going minimalist at Just Life

by Penny on July 7, 2008

I’m a regular at EcoGreen Organic at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail when it comes to buying organic food stuff. But whenever I’m at Ikano Power Centre during the weekend, I’d just buy my organic vegetables at Just Life instead of purposely making a trip to EcoGreen.

The Just Life store promotes a concept of love for nature and respect for life. So while there, you not only find plenty of organic food stuff, you will also find an organic cafe, a counter selling Living Nature’s natural skincare products from New Zealand and a storefront that promotes various eco-friendly products. Just Life is also big on promoting the recycling of plastic bags and encourages its customers to bring their own bags for their purchases. Looking at the store and its contents, one would feel quite comfortable in their minimalist set-up that jives with the store’s concept.

So far, so good and although the items there are a little more expensive, I didn’t mind. They do have a membership card where it entitles you to some discounts, but then you need to pay an annual fee on that card. I don’t remember how much exactly it was, but I recall it wasn’t worth it if I don’t shop there regularly enough to make my discounts worth the annual membership fee. At EcoGreen on the other hand, membership is free and I get a 10% discount on every purchase.

Recently, I popped in as usual and picked out a bag of spinach and cauliflower. After paying at the counter, the lady cashier just stood there with my vegetables still on the counter. I asked if she was going to bag them and she asked if I can just carry them as they were, without a bag. I said no, because all I had was my handbag and a baby in a pram. I asked her to put them in a bag for me like they always do and she told me that they no longer give out bags. She asked if I have my own bags and I showed her that I was empty-handed. I didn’t even have other shopping bags I could use. She shrugged and smiled at me.

I was quite exasperated with the situation as I wasn’t going to carry around my vegetables like that. In the end, she got out this used carton box and placed the vegatables in it. She then said “Next time, maybe you can bring your own bag” to which I replied “No, next time I won’t be buying from here anymore!”.

With that, I walked away with a box in my hands. If you saw me, you would’ve thought I have just purchased a pet and feeding it vegetables!
