The GPS device is without a doubt one of the coolest invention in our times. Last year I had the chance to use a GPS Bay device for a couple of days and I found it so cool and especially useful when trying to navigate my way into some housing estate that I don’t know how to get to.
We were planning to get the device but after we failed to get some really good discount on it, we skipped the purchase because back then a good GPS device and mapping software would set you back with a 4-digit price tag.
Today, GPS devices are considerably cheaper, but still not that affordable since it is not a dead-on necessity. But, if you are really in need of one, here’s some good news for you to get your hands on it at a cheaper alternative. You do not need to buy the GPS device itself if your mobile phone is able to support GPS software.
Recently we installed a Garmin GPS software on a Nokia phone that supports GPS. The cost of this original software only costs RM400! It’s a one time installation cost and you will get 2 maps – Malaysia and Singapore. If you need more maps, you can enquire about the download and additional costs, if any.

I’m aware that in the market there are some cheaper ways to get hold of the same software, to the tune of just RM100 or so, but bear in mind that if you are offered such a deal, it is most likely that you are downloading a pirated copy of the software. How well did the mobile Garmin GPS work?
Wonderfully! The device is tracked by a satellite and the accuracy is fantastic. I would have to say the mapping system is better than that of Map King which I tried on GPS Bay last year.
The sound was crystal clear and the visuals were a great help too. Of course, the bigger the mobile phone screen, the better the visual. On screen, you can see useful landmarks and points of interest other than the map and navigation. I was especially thrilled to see mini logos of Maybank, Hyundai and Perodua on the screen to reflect those actual landmarks on the street, as well as the food outlets denoted by a food bowl. At least if I’m in some unfamiliar place, I know where I can find food ahead of time!
The auto calculaton of distance and navigation is also faster than that of Map King. If you have missed a suggested turning or decide to use a different route, it will immediately detect and recalculate once you have missed the turning. With Map King, I found that it was not as fast to recalculate.
Is the Garmin GPS recommended?
I personally will say yes. I love it and I think if you have a mobile phone that supports GPS, why not go for it? If you do not have a phone that supports it and thinking of getting a GPS device, you might want to consider getting a phone that supports GPS, as it may still work out cheaper than the device itself. Of course, that’s completely your call, as you may prefer to have a separate use of your phone from the GPS device. But Garmin is definitely recommended.
Now there shouldn’t be any reason for me to tell anyone the reason I’m late is because I lost my way right? And if you have one, you too can’t use that excuse!
