From a wedding gown to a dress
by Penny on April 13, 2008
I’ve been toying with the idea of altering my
wedding gown into a dress so that I can wear it again. As much as I love the gown and the memories it brings, it’s also very sad to be able to look at it and not get any use out of it. So when a friend wanted to introduce me to her designer friend, I lept at the opportunity to have my wedding gown restyled before I changed my mind about it.
And since I was at it, I thought I might as well bring along some materials I’ve been keeping. I bought meters and meters of satin in four different shades with the intention of making some gowns for the wedding but didn’t end up with any. Now, I wanted to make something casual and versatile out of them so that I could wear them for many occassions. The designer set off to work and drew me some dresses to pick from.
I ended up making a sky-blue day dress that has flirty trims at the knees to give it some bounce when I walk. It reminds me of the kind of dress you would see in the movie Down With Love, portraying the fashion of the 1960s! I also made a red babydoll – a first for me. I don’t ever wear babydolls! I’m glad it turned out alright. At least I don’t look funny in it, the way I always thought I would.
Last but not least, about the wedding gown…well I just turned it into a short dress. I added on spaghetti straps and had it cut to just above the knee. Originally, it was an A-line gown but I had it reshaped into a pencil skirt. Shaped as such, the designer was very thoughtful in making it easier for me to walk by making a slit on the back of the dress.
Now that it’s all done and there’s no turning back, do I regret cutting up the gown? Not really, at least I know I’ve done something to get a lot more use of the dress now.
