My experience in renewing car insurance and road tax online

Shopping Online

Some weeks ago I wrote about my experience on MYEG website with the aim of renewing my car insurance online as well as to renew my road tax. I had an unpleasant experience just trying to register for an account and that sent me away from the site. I went on to search for alternative ways to quickly renew my car insurance.

I also tried using Etiqa’s online insurance site to purchase my car insurance but felt that the system was weird and did not want to proceed with them. What happens on the site is that you are given a quotation form to fill up some details about your car so that it can work out the premium for you immediately. I did that and the site showed me what my yearly premium was.

Happy with that, I clicked on that “Purchase” button where I now have to fill up all over again the same information on another page, because the earlier one was just a quotation. Fine, I thought, and refilled all the details. This time, the premium amount came up to RM200 more than the quotation earlier!

How can this be? Everything was filled up exactly the same both times with no additional items requested. I decided then that the quotation was just to lure people into buying from them. Not happy with them, I again turned away to search for more alternatives.

Then I found an independent car insurance agent’s website and before I did anything, I picked up the phone to give them a call. The guy on the phone was quite professional and friendly and he’s an agent with Allianz. I explained to him that I wanted to get all the renewals done quickly and he said it was not a problem.

So I proceeded to fill in the information required on his site to generate a quotation. It came to the same amount which was first quoted by the Etiqa quotation site. By now I was hoping that I won’t be led to another page where the amount will be bumped up like the Etiqa one. It didn’t. Instead, I was given another 5% rebate off that amount! How great is that?

I submitted the form and not long after the agent emailed me the insurance cover. I then made an online payment to the agent’s bank account. Shortly after the agent contacted me again to say that the renewed status of my car insurance has been sent to MYEG where I can now proceed to renew my road tax online with them.

I was given a direct link to one of the pages within MYEG and all I had to do was choose my option of having my road tax delivered to me, provide my insurance cover number and pay the cost of road tax and delivery charges to MYEG. The delivery of the road tax only costs me RM6, which is cheaper than the charges of a runner which is normally set at RM10. I then sat back and waited for my road tax to be sent to my door step. I didn’t wait long, it came the following working day and I was all done.

Except for the initial bad experience trying to use MYEG’s web services and also the misleading premium amounts quoted by Etiqa, I found that my online car insurance renewal process with the Allianz agent has been very breezy and convenient. I guess you just have to be lucky enough to find the right platform to have things done simply and quickly.

So if you are due to renew your car insurance and road tax, you can also try doing it online. Just don’t go with MYEG and Etiqa if you feel the same way I do about what I had gone through with them! :)

Now wouldn’t it be nice if other insurance policies like medical and term life insurances were that easy to purchase too?

Ok, I will…but first let me go and find it. I stupidly didn’t bookmark it. But I still have the email of the agent so let me hunt it down :)
